booting up issue with missing vxd's

hi all,
i am experiencing some annoying booting issues. apparently this old
computer i am dealing with has had some sort of Veritas backup software
which does not work (hasn't for years). There is no available installation
cd. when booting up, i get a missing file error message (5 of them
actually).
c:\windows\system\ssprop.vxd
c:\windows\system\ssrtlw.vxd
c:\windows\system\dla\tfswdres.vxd
c:\windows\system\dla\tfswpool.vxd
c:\windows\system\drvwddm.vxd

So, if i try to uninstall the Veritas from add/remove, it wants an
installation cd (which is not available to me). Is there any other way to
clear this up without formatting the hard drive?

Thanks to all and happy holidays everyone!

A manual uninstall. Look for the installation folder. Find what files
are there and what dates they were installed. Search for them in the
registry. Search for references to Veritas and to the name of the
program. Delete registry keys. Search for the files in XP and for any
other files created on that same date. If you find some that weren't in
the install folder search for those in the registry too. Check
properties to see if any information there can support those files being
part of this program. Delete the files and foldes.

Make sure there is a complete system backup and a backup of the registry.

Hi Lorne,

And this is a WnXP system? If so, then of course those files are missing, as
they are for a Win9x system. What you would need to do is locate where the
veritas software is loading from, MVP Doug Knox's startup tracker may be
able to do this for you. You will find it under WinXP Utilities at
www.dougknox.com. Once you know where it is loading from, you should be able
to remove the reference.
