Booting Problem

This Win XP Pro PC has been booting and running fine.
Then yesterday it wouldn't boot, even from Safe Mode. The
hard drive shows up in the BIOS, and on the Secondary
Post Screen. When I boot from the Win XP CD Rom and
select "R" it starts for a few seconds to do something
and then freezes up. A "C" prompt appears with small box
next to it. The box is a strange caracter made up of 5
horizontal lines. Nothing else happens until I manually
shut off the PC.

Any help would be appreciated.

I presume you mean your pc wont even load the desktop
regardless of which mode you are going into. I had a
similar problem when upgrading from Win XP Home to XP Pro.
Though i didnt get the same symtoms as you, I wasnt able
to get into safe mode. Kept re booting infinately from the
xp logo.

I had to re intall XP Pro as a new installation not
repair. Boot from cd rom, and there are option for you to
delete the partitions and install the O/S as a new
installation. This worked but had to install all my
software and set up modem/printers as well.

I hope that help if thats something worth trying. Or you
may want to do a check disk before you install anything
and find out if its something you can fix easily.
Good luck.
