Booting issue

When I boot Windows XP I get the gui background, but I do not get a
logon prompt (box used for credentials). However, if i first go into
safe mode, then reboot normally I get a logon as normal. Does anyone
have a suggestion for this. I appreciate your help...

Give this a go. From XP's main menu, select Control Panel. Then select User Accounts. Then pick Change the way users log on or off.
It seems to me you want to use the Welcome screen.

I tried your suggestion and it does not come up with the gui.
now. I still have to go into safe mode first, then reboot and it will
come up normally... Is there anything else you can suggest?
