Boot issues

I have a system running windows xp that hangs on boot it gets to logon
screen and will not let you control alt delete.if i reboot it will then
let me but when i logon it gets me into computer but locks up there as
well.I can boot to safe mode no problem i scanned system with avast
found some viruses and deleted them but still same after this. i was
going to scan system with avg next and also try windows xp repair.i am
looking for any ideas i dont want to format this system.this system is
a system max running windows xp pro.

you gave the best ideas.

a repair should get you into windows.
and run the anti virus
then you might want to run the repair again (if the anti virus deletes
or "quarantines"(moves) important files)

Or you could Run the anti virus before the repair.

AVG rescue disks are probably an AVG for DOS, i'm guessing on that, I
don't know if they run on NTFS, they might. It'd be a bit pointless if
they didn't. please report back on that one.

You really need to run antivirus & anti-spyware tools in Safe mode first. And if you need to do any downloads, use another machine that is known to be clean.

Make very sure your system does not have malware.

Sysclean would be a good first run for virus check. Just be sure to also run other spyware / malware checks.

The cleanup sequence I tend to follow is: Coolweb Shredder first, followed by Adaware, SYSCLEAN, and Antivirus check with current updates.
