Booting into WinXp Home

2 of our 3 home computers 1 XpHome & other Xp Pro)have recently developed the
following problem as Windows is loading. The Windows screen comes on waiting
for the load to complete/ It then goes into another screen whick is blank but
now has a rectanglar box, an OK at the bottom center of the box, and a very
small box at the upper left corner that has some kind of hieroglyphic symbol.
There's also a pointer. At that point, they either click the OK button or
click the x to close. It then will load normally and go to the desktop.

What is this "box"? How and from where did it appear? How do they get rid
of it?
