Booting From my External Hard Drive

I want to know if I booted from my External Hard Drive and loaded another operating system if I could then just change the booting order back and forth between my Original C: and my external drive Would doing this screw anything like my registry up or my bios up or anything up is this possible
 
Well considering most external hard drives are USB, your BIOS would have to support booting from USB
