Booting from External HD

I was windering if it is possible to boot from a portible external Hard drive
connected via USB 2.0?

I wanted to have a operating system partition and a data partition on the
External hard drive and be able to plug the external HD into any computer and
boot off it.

Is this possible?

AFAIK, you cannot boot from an external device.

Can you configure an CD that has a Windows Operating sys on it and all the
necessary drivers to boot up on any computer?

Yes, you can, and it's a terrific tool for system maintenance.
It's a Bart PE Boot CD, and the tools to make one are
available from www.bootdisk.com. You will need a CD
burner and a WinXP Professional CD (but no licence number!).

booting from a USB device is dependant on the BIOS of the system, and
whether it allows it....

It also depends on whether the operating sys provides capability to boot
from "removable devices". Windows doesn't.
