i was wondering if it was possble to determine whether a cd-rom is bootable
without trying to boot from it. are there certian files that must be on the
cd-rom? is there a program that can scan the cd-rom to find out?

This will explain the process of making a CD bootable.

Yes, certain files are required on the CD. But looking for those
can take as long as trying to boot from it.

99% of the time you can assume a CD is not bootable. If a CD is
bootable, it will almost always say so on the sleeve or case it
comes in. Things like the the XP CD are bootable, as are many
antivirus CDs, but most of thte time you can assume they aren't
bootable.

Not only that, but many bootable CDs run their OWN programs, as
opposed to booting the computer from your C drive for normal use.
They're usually intended for a specific job.

More information would probably get you a better answer.

Isobuster is a good program that you can use to look at the contents of a CD
and see if there is boot information.

How do you use isobuster to check for boot information? Also what if you
have an image of a cd on the hard drive, how can you tell if it is boot able
without burning it to a cd?

Just try using it.
If you use Isobuster with your Windows CD, for example, you will see an
entry 'Bootable CD' on the tree view on the left. Selecting it will show
you the boot files on the right side. If you want to check image files you
will need to mount them to a virtual drive like Nero's ImageDrive or
VirtualCD or something like that. Or, you could load it into UltraISO,
which also can be used to edit the CD images. www.ultraiso.com
