Boot volumn c: changed to f:

I'm stumped on this and need help. I recently applied xp sp2 to a fresh
install of xp. Now, when I boot up the c: boot vol. is now f:. I've gone
into disk management and tried to reset the drive letter to c: but it will
not allow this to happen. Any help is greatly appreciated!

What you describe is usually the result of having external drives
(Zip, USB, card reader) attached to your PC when you install XP.
Even an internal Zip drive or card reader can yield the same
results. There is no way to get XP to reset the drive letter to
C. The only way to correct the problem is to reinstall with only
the keyboard, mouse and monitor attached.

If you're absolutely certain that Windows was installed on the C
drive (which I kind of doubt) before you applied SP2 then you
could try uninstalling SP2 and see if the drive letters are
reset. Also, try disconnecting any extra drives and reboot. See
what letters are assigned.

It is impractical to change it. You will have to start over. This
usually arises from the presence of an external drive (very often a Zip
one) when setup is run; disconnect such devices first

Make sure in Setup that when it asks where, you hit ESC and delete the
current partition. To be sure I would then reboot so there is no danger
of that wrong letter being remembered
