I had to replace system board and cpu..Using XP Pro when I
try to boot up using the same H\hard drive I get a screen
that says: We apoligize for the inconvience, but windows
did not start successfull. My options are"
Safe mode
safe mode with networking
safe mode with command command prompt

start windows normally. and a timer at the bottom of the
screen. None of the above choices will boot up the
system. Is there any way I can do to save my data and get
XP to boot, or do I have to re-install the OS.

HELP!!!!!
Thank You

Lee,

I'm guessing that the replacement motherboard and CPU weren't the same
make/model as the originals? If you replace your motherboard and/or CPU,
it's always a good idea to do a repair installation of Windows so that it
can redetect hardware and install necessary drivers.

Here is a pretty good set of instructions on how to perform a repair
install:

Remember, this will reset all your patches, so you'll want to repatch your
system as soon as possible, and may not want to connect your PC to a network
until after you've turned on the firewall.

You cannot expect to rip the guts out of your system and for Windows to
still boot. You must now perform a repair installation. However, if your
Windows disc is a recovery CD, you have just invalidated your licence as PC
manufacturers consider the motherboard to be 'the system'. If this is the
case your only choice is to purchase the full version of whatever flavour
you like and reinstall clean.

Unless it's identical to the old one, changing the motherboard
almost always means at least a repair installation.
