Boot up problem

Hi all

I recently reformatted and reinstalled xp home, since then I can only
boot up with the windows xp cd in my cd drive. If I try to boot up
without the cd it just says disc boot error, please insert system
disc. Then when I put the cd in it says to boot from the cd press any
key, but if I dont press anything it loads up xp fine, and its
completely fully functional. Basically if I want to load up xp I must
have the cd in the drive or it wont work.

I only have one 80GB harddrive. I have tried changing the order of
boot devices in the BIOS to Hard Drive first and even stopped the CD
from booting aswell but this error still comes up. I have ran recovery
console and tried both the'fixboot' and 'fixmbr' commands to no avail.
The harddrive is identified in the BIOS and everything, it works fine
but it simply will not let me boot from the harddrive!

In device manager the hard drive location is 0(0) and my boot.ini file
looks like this :

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect

Could there be a problem there? Is my hard drive on partition (0) by
any chance? How do you find out. Is there anything else I could change
in the BIOS?

Please help.

Thanks

Hi,

Boot with the WinXP CD, load the recovery console by hitting "r" when
prompted. Logon to the installation, then run these:

attrib -s -h -r C:\boot.ini
del C:\boot.ini
bootcfg /rebuild

When prompted, call it "WindowsXP Home", and add /fastdetect as the option.
Exit the Recovery Console, remove the CD and reboot.

Though the existing boot.ini appears correctly, there is some corruption.
