After a power outage yesterday, upon start-up my computer was saying
'pri master hard disk: S.m.a.r.t. status BAD, back up and replace.' I
turned off the S.m.a.r.t. (self-monitoring, analysis and reproting
technology) feature and now I can start windows manually, but everytime I
restart, the computer has problems and I have to restart in safe mode, or
just manually restart normally. This is alittle above my head, but I was
able to get windows XP to start and get on the internet here, but I am afraid
to restart my compouter and go through this again for the umpteenth time. i
have tried everything in the startup troubleshooter and it didn't help.

Have you even READ what you wrote? Let's recap that:

You had a power outage. Since you can't say so, I'll ass-u-me
you were using the computer at the time, but you didn't have to
be in order to suffer data damage or even platter damage.

-- You got a SMART status that your disk was BAD.
-- To fix that, you turned OFF the source of the error message.
-- And now you wonder what's wrong when you try to boot from that
drive?

The best help I can give you is this:
-- Find out what SMART is about.
-- Find out what that error message means.
-- Find out what you should do when you get that error message.
-- Do what you're supposed to do.

Since the message told you that your drive was bad, why are you not dealing
with that problem? Do you think it will physically repair itself? Not
likely!

Time for a new drive.
