Boot up black screen with USB connected

Hello,

I've searched this forum for an hour, I've seen similar instances of
this problem, but no real solution for it.

Problem:
1. Install XP, SP2
2. plug in USB device, reboot, get a black screen during boot up. As
soon as I unplug the USB, I see the login screen
3. Login, plug in the USB, install drivers, device works fine
4. Reboot, black screen during boot up, unplug USB, login, plug USB,
devices show up as normal, device works fine

It shouldn't be a hardware/BIOS problem because I did all this on
win2k on the same machine and it was fine. Actually I've done this for
2 other machines and the only difference is the OS. I turned off power
management for the USB root HUB as mentioned in another post, no luck.

Only thing I can think of is that:
1. XP can't detect the hardware at startup
2. There's a conflict during startup loading the drivers (ie, let
windows start up first, then plug in device)

If anyone has the solution or knows if microsoft has published
something in knowledge base please let me know.

Thanks
Henry

I get this on my ASUS P4P800, but this is because the BIOS adds USB
devices to the boot order and actually places them first in the boot
order. You may want to try updating the BIOS even though you claim it
doesn't do this with a Win 2000 installation. It is quite possible that
XP conflicts with the device or something like you mentioned, but not
likely. It is usually the way the BIOS deals with the device.

Thanks for the suggestion.

With the USB plugged in, I checked the boot sequence and it's CD then
harddrive, nothing else.

Only thing that's USB related in the BIOS is:
USB Emulation <ON | NO BOOT | OFF>
USB Controller <ON | OFF>

Anyone know what the emulation setting is?

I think it's not driver related since this happens with or without
drivers installed. Is there some kind of plug and play, power
management, or hardware detection setting I'm not aware about in XP?
Maybe I'll update the BIOS.

Thanks

USB Emulation determines whether the system basic input/output system
(BIOS) controls Universal Serial Bus (USB) keyboards and mice. When On
is selected, the system BIOS controls USB keyboards and mice until a USB
driver is loaded by the operating system. When Off is selected (the
default), the system BIOS does not control USB keyboards and mice,
though they are functional during the boot routine. Set USB Emulation to
Off if you are using a Personal System/2 (PS/2)-compatible keyboard and
mouse. You cannot use the USB ports with PS/2 peripherals.

Not exactly sure what is going on or if the fault is with Windows or the
BIOS :S
