boot sector

Hi every one!

I have a question about the boot sector, I have a pc with 2 partition, c:\
is windows 2000 pro all patched, and d:\ with windows xp pro all patched. Now
the probleme is that i don't use the 2000 pro anymore and use only the xp
pro...

I would like to gain space on this drive (with is got 20gb) but the thing is
that if i format the c:\ i will lose all the boot sertor and i wont be able
to boot with xp pro.

is there a way that i can format the c:\ drive and then aftre use the
recovery consol to re-write the boot sector on the d:\ drive?

any advise are welcome

You will likely have problems. When you boot up Windows XP on the second
partition, what is the partition designation in Windows Explorer? Is it seen
as being resident on partition C or D?

If it is seen as D, some programs will install a bunch of files to
C:\Program Files by default, even though the operating system is on drive D.
It is the way the program installer is written. Now, if you delete drive C:
those programs will not function.

This is in addition to losing those critical files necessary to boot the
operating system.

Hi,

You can format and then boot the Recovery Console and run fixboot D:, but it
would be far easier to simply delete everything on C: except ntldr,
ntdetect.com, and boot.ini (those are the boot files that you will need to
keep). You can then edit boot.ini to remove the references to the Win2000
installation.
