boot question

is there any way to start the computer and not load
windows XP?
 
reboot and press F8 before the windows load screen. A menu will pop up.
You can load into dos mode from (I think).

There is no DOS mode. You can load Safe Mode - Command Prompt only, but
that is the basic XP system using the command prompt (cmd.exe) as shell
instead of explorer's GUI.

To get a different system, such as real mode DOS, you have to have that
available separately; installed on a separate partition, or boot a
floppy (eg a Win98 start up disk)
