our pc has win xp home, and started having probs with possible unknown virus.
ran norton update and scan pc several times with no found virus's. with some
serching into the system my wife had suspected something wrong with norton
itsself, so I uninstalled norton all together. Then it started shuting down
right after desktop appears, then before it appeared, so we went to safe
modewith netwoking and was able to get to the net for about a min then shuts
down. every time it shuts down its life span gets shorter. soon not able to
get it to boot at all. I tried diskettes with ontrack on them and am able to
see the sytem then shuts down. Now, when I boot the monitor does'nt even turn
on and the pc wont read any of the drives. allthough they still open and
close(cd drive). Is it toast or is it fixable?

the video card could be blown, try another. it does sound like a virus yes
just like one i seen the other day! (pc would start but no video). i wouldn't
bother with norton, AVG is just fine (in 4 years) try other video card
first, if the monitor comes on then i would format, but if you have some
files, docs, pics etc you want to save. take the hard drive out of the pc,
put in another pc as a slave drive. copy your files onto the other (master) .
if you need help with this you only need let me know

I can get the monitor to work. I installed a new hard drive, but a window
comes up during boot telling me the install was not complete. I have
formated the drive and reinstalled twice. Have also bought new memory card
having had simmilar problems with one another time. Still not any different.
The install is a norton ghost windows xp home from the pc manufacturer that
came with pc. I have been trying to aquire pc diagnostic tools for the
motherboard but none so far have helped. Could it be the motherboard?

the problem is your windows xp home norton ghost, it will only work with the
hard drive it came on, i have ruined other hard drives trying to install oem
windows xp with norton ghost too. it just won't work. the only thing to do
is to use a different windows xp, theres nothing wrong with your motherboard
or the video card.
