Boot problems whilst specific HDD is plugged in.

Kurayami.nin

I've never used groups before, so I apologize if I'm stuffing up
anywhere.

My problem is, after reinstalling windows, if I have my SATA 120gb hdd
plugged in, windows will just hang during the Windows XP logo screen
(not responsive, but the bas still moving).
If I unplug it, it works fine.
I can also plug in a different SATA drive without hassles.
My windows drive is Old school ATA...
Drive with issues works fine in other machines...

I've been told there may be something in my boot.ini stuffing up.
Making it try and use anotehr hdd for part of the boot or something?

boot.ini is...
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect

Seems like the default gig, all in order... I've checked BIOS that my
Windows drive is master and whatnot...

Any idea's would be appreciated.

A failing hd can cause the sys not to boot, and since your problem appears
to be connected with this individual drive this would seem a possibility.
The hd manu will lilely have a free checking utility avaible on their site.

Kurayami.nin...
It might be best at the outset to clarify your situation so let me ask you
the following...

1. When you reinstalled "windows" (and we're talking about the Win XP OS
here, right?), you did so on your PATA HDD, the one you refer to as the "Old
school ATA". Is that right?

2. So setting aside the non-recognition problem with the 120 GB HDD, when
you boot with the "Old school ATA" HDD solely connected to the system, (or
even if the other SATA HDDs you refer to are connected), the system boots OK
& functions OK, right? There are no problems with your system *unless* that
120 GB HDD is connected as a secondary HDD, right?

3. So you've *no* problems with your boot drive - the PATA one - *unless*
that 120 GB HDD is connected, right?

4. I'm assuming the 120 GB that's connected as a secondary HDD is a PATA HDD
and not a SATA HDD. Is that right?

5. If that is so, are you absolutely sure you've jumpered that HDD correctly
and it's securely connected to the appropriate IDE connector on your
motherboard? It is connected as Primary Master, right?

6. And that the HDD boot order in your motherboard's BIOS is correctly
reflected to show that your PATA boot drive has boot priority over any other
HDD installed?

7. Check in Disk Management to determine that the 120 GB HDD is correctly
listed and has been assigned a drive letter.

Kurayami.nin...
I fear I somewhat muddled my response to your query...

I just realized that you did indicate that the 120 GB HDD is a SATA HDD and
not a PATA one as I incorrectly assumed.

That being so, I'm somewhat at a loss as to what to suggest. Since you say
that HDD functions without problems in other machines we can assume it's
non-defective. And you say you can connect other SATA HDDs in your machine
(I assume to the same SATA connector that you used for the 120 GB HDD) and
there's no problem there with the system booting when those HDDs are
connected. That's right, isn't it?

Assuming the 120 SATA HDD has jumpers allowing the drive to function either
with a 1.5 Gb/s interface or a 3.0 Gb/s interface, have you tried changing
the jumper configuration? (There's no reason why that should resolve the
problem, but give it a try anyway).

And have you tried connecting the 120 GB HDD to another SATA connector on
your motherboard?

Anyway, do check Disk Management as previously suggested and review your
motherboard's installation manual or user guide to see if there are any
possible BIOS setting(s) that may have to be changed.

I can't see where your boot.ini file would be at the root of your problem.
