Boot problems please help

I am running xp home and all of a sudden the computer has a problem booting.
Sometimes it boots to my background with no icons, task bar or anything and
other times it is just a blank screen. If I walk away and leave it alone it
will eventually start up to the blank background after 5 minutes or so. I can
boot properly in safe mode with no problems. I have tried restoring, turning
off all non essential start-ups, booting from last good configuration etc
but I am now at a loss and not sure what else to do. Any suggestions???

No I did not do anything to it. I left the computer for about 15 min and
then came back to a screen with just the background and no icons. I figured
I could just reboot and things would be fine but now they have turned for the
worse. I have tried repair the xp operating system with the cd and it
installs all the files and reboots itself but now after the windows start up
screen it just goes blank. I can not start it in safemode now because it
states that the re-installation will not boot in safe mode. I am just not
that computer minded to know what to do from here. Any suggestions???
Thanks
