boot problems - DPatrick

Continuation of emails on 4-10-04. Still having problems with starting Win2000

In reference to my prior emails - was unable to reply. Not sure why

Specificall

My system continues to cycle through a boot up phase
You see 3 screens in the boot loop

1. 1st screen show the F2 setup optio
2. 2nd screen shows the starting windows bar at the bottom of the screen and allows you to hit F8 for startup options
3. 3rd screen shows the Windows 2000 logo and gets about 3/4 the way through the process and restarts to screen 1 again. During this you here a click (sounds like it reboots) followed by a brief flash of vertical lines and then back to screen 1

It continues this cycle over and over again until the power is shut down or you select F8 for safe mode boot up

I have obtained a copy of win2000 prof installation disk as I could not locate my original

Any suggestions on how to repair.

Then it does blue screen. By default Windows 2000 sets the bit to
automatically restart in the case of a blue screen. To be realistic I don't
think I would spend too much time on this. Rather your best course may be to
install a parallel install of the operating system, recover your data files
to some backup media, and then start a new install of the operating system.

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

That click may be coming from the monitor, as it tries and fails to get
from basic VGA to a different setting. That could indicate a bad
videocard driver. Since I didn't see the original thread I have no idea
what transpired earlier, but I hope this helps somehow.

Dan, it was a failed install/ uninstall of Norton antispam

I just reread the original thread. Can you still boot 'Safe Mode' ? If so
check Event Viewer and Device Manager for errors and or non-starting
devices.

what do you recommend to get the system back up. I really need to access the data on the programs I reference above

It currently shows 2 partition
unknown at 31m
an
c:ntfs at 9,507 mb w/5008 mb free

what happens if I install on the existing c drive?

You still didn't answer....Can you still boot 'Safe Mode' ? Installing to
C:\ ? I don't know where the damaged install is but either case you'll have
a new install of the operating system but none of the applications will
function. If you can't boot 'Safe Mode' this would at least let you recover
your data. Just don't format the partition when you do the install. Once
your data is recovered you'll want to wipe the drive for the new install.
You can either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup disks. The set
of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000 CD-Rom; change
to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute makeboot.exe (from dos)

letter assignments with your new install.
