Boot Menu

Hello,

I have a Windows XP SP2 box that when I boot up, I get the following error:

WE APOLOGIZE FOR THE INCONVENIENCE BUT WINDOWS DID NOT START SUCCESSFULLY.
A RECENT HARDWARE OR SOFTWARE CHANGE MAY HAVE CAUSED THIS.

When I try to choose any of the boot menu choices that appear, it keeps
cycling back to the same error, etc. There has been no recent changes. At
this point, I'm really just trying to boot into the OS to recover data.

Please assist.

Thank you.

Recover your data first and then try a repair install - after you've
determined that the hardware is healthy.

It is completely possible to retrieve data off a drive even if Windows
won't boot. Here are some ways:

1. Pull the drive and slave it in a computer running a working install
of XP. Depending on the target drive's characteristics, you may need a
drive adapter; i.e., laptop-to-IDE or a SATA controller card, etc. A
usb/firewire external drive enclosure works very well, too. Use the
working Windows Explorer to copy the data to the rescue system's hard
drive and then burn the data to cd or dvd.

2. Often XP will not boot with a slaved drive that has a damaged file
system. In that case, boot the target computer with either a Bart's PE
or a Linux live cd such as Knoppix and retrieve the data that way.

Thanks Haggis and Malke,

I was able to run a chkdsk /r using the recovery console and then was able
to boot into the OS to recover data.
