I used the restore function to attempt to correct a
defrag problem and now my XP boots to a windows logon. I
wish the machine to come up to the desktop without any
logon. I unchecked the welcome screen box in user
accounts, and have looked for password files without
success. Can someone help me with this issue? Thank you
in advance for any assistance offered.

Hi Curt,

Configure Windows XP to Automatically Logon:

Solution 1:
Click Start, Run and type "control userpasswords2", and click Ok.
Uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer"
option, and click Ok.

Solution 2:
If you have one user account and no password configured, Windows XP will log
you in automatically. Otherwise, you'll have to do the following:
Obtain and install the Windows XP version of TweakUI.

Download it from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Open TweakUI (it's in Start -> Programs -> Powertoys for Windows XP).
Expand the Logon branch, and click Autologon.
Turn on the Log on automatically at system startup option, type your
username and password, and click Ok.

This MSKB article explains how to enable auto login

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315231&FR=1&PA=1&SD=HSCH

WARNING! it involves editing the registry.

Otherwise, I recomend installing Tweak UI, which does it in a better way:
