[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP

Peter,
It is not recommended to edit the boot.ini file but anyways editing it
depends on what do you want to edit it for. What is your purpose to edit this
file?

Peter,
Tell me if i understand you correctly here. You cannot see the boot.ini tab
at the top in msconfig is that right?? If it is then try steps give below. I
presume that the partition on which you have windows xp installed is
formatted with ntfs (To check this right click on the drive on which you have
windows xp installed and click on properties. In the window that opens you
should have that beside file system).

1>Click on start->run and type c:\boot.ini. Do you get an access denied
message??
If you do then this means you do not have permission to access that file.
Are you an administrator on this computer?? If you are then continue with the
next step else first log in with an account with administrative priviliges.
If you do not get this error message and the file opens try the tip at the
end.
2>Right click on the boot.ini file and click on Properties. Click on the
security tab and make sure your username is listed and then assign the
appropriate permissions.
Once done click on OK and after that open msconfig again to confirm you have
the tab.

**TIP**

Open registry editor (start->run and type regedit). Browse to the entry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig. In the right
pane if you have a boot.ini entry right click on it and click on delete. Now
close the registry editor and open up msconfig again and wollahh there you
have it. Your boot.ini tab is back again.

Tell me if this helps

Yogi,

Thank you for your good advice. I opened the C root and could not found the
boot.ini. However, I found the boot.ini is located in the E drive (I have
partitioned the 120Gig Hdd into C, D, E and F drive). I right clicked on the
Boot.ini and than selected properties. I could only found the General and

I have also ran regedit and navigated to

I could found services, startup, system.ini and win.ini but NOT boot.ini

What else should I do next?

Yogi,

I have unchecked the Box "use simple file sharing" in the folder option. Now
I could add my user name and have full control on the boot.ini file in the E
drive. I have reboot the PC and ran MSCONFIG again but still no luck. I have
also run regedit and there was no boot.ini in the msconfig folder
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\state

I opened the boot.ini file and the content is as follows:
[boot loader]
timeout=1
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

It indicated that the boot.ini is located in partition(4) which is the E drive
(I have partitioned the 120Gig Hdd into C, D E and F drives)

In disk management, The Status of the C drive is the Boot drive and the E
drive is the System drive.

I don't know why the boot.ini was placed in the E drive as usually it should
be located in the C drive.

So, what should I do to get back the boot.ini tab in msconfig?

TIA

2>Right click on the boot.ini file and click on Properties. Click on the
security tab and make sure your username is listed and then assign the
appropriate permissions.
Once done click on OK and after that open msconfig again to confirm you have
the tab.

**TIP**

Open registry editor (start->run and type regedit). Browse to the entry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig. In the right
pane if you have a boot.ini entry right click on it and click on delete. Now
close the registry editor and open up msconfig again and wollahh there you
have it. Your boot.ini tab is back again.

Tell me if this helps

Peter,
It is not recommended to edit the boot.ini file but anyways editing it
depends on what do you want to edit it for. What is your purpose to edit this
file?

Ramesh,

Yes, I can open it using your method. Below is the content in notepad:

[boot loader]
timeout=1
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

Pls advise how to edit the boot loader.

TIA

Peter,

Are you able to open the Boot.ini file using this method?

Click Start, Run and type SYSDM.CPL
Click the Advanced button
Under "Startup and Recovery", click Settings
Click Edit

When I ran MSCONFIG in my XP Pro SP2 machine, I found that the BOOT.INI is
missing. What can I do to get it back?

TIA

I read this whole thing and it helped me get the Boot.ini tab back in
MSCONFIG. Still 1 problem though. Here is how it is setup first
though

F: has windows
C: just extra storage

That happened due to a cable mix up. Anyways, I pasted the boot.ini
file to C: and then BOOM my boot.ini tab was back in msconfig.
However, I still cannot boot in safe mode and I think I know why. When
I edit the boot.ini file through msconfig it saves my changes to the
boot.ini folder on C:. The problem is Windows is on F:. So I want
msconfig to use the boot.ini on F: instead of C:. How do I do that?

If you want to boot to safe mode just keep tapping the F8 function key on
your keyboard and you will have a menu of advanced boot options. Choose the
safe mode and press enter. That should get you to the safe mode.

Hope this helps,
