boot.ini deleting by itself

I have the same problem that boot.ini file get deleted by itself.
I have mfst XP Hone edition SP2.

After every few boot the boot.ini gets deleted and I have to use XP cd to
boot and rebuild the boot.ini file. I even made the boot.ini file read only,
hidden. Nothing works. It get deleted next time you boot. Now I had made a
copy of boot.ini file in Windows directory and just copy a copy to root
directory booting from XP CD.

My guess is either this is virus that keeps on deleting this file.
Or bug in XP updates when it install updates it deletes the boot.ini file.

If you need more help repost specifying:
1. What AV routine you use and what it currently reports.
2. What variety of WinXP is installed.

Wasn't this caused by the Ask Toolbar respectively the AskUpgrade Service ?

If so, uninstall it.
