other suggestion site to delete the boot.ini and rebuild, but still getting
the same error message

I have one hardisk with 3 partitions and running two different OS.XP and
Macintosh

Being that all of this started while you were trying to reinstall
Windows and in view of the fact that at first the installation couldn't

Just a heads up. If the master boot record provides slightly inaccurate
information on the XP boot (system) partition, the file table seen may be
inaccurate as a result. If the file table is a little off, it would explain
not finding hal.dll and so forth. In such a case, the only fix is removing
the XP boot (system) partition, and creating a new one which updates the
master boot record in the process. Simple formatting of the existing
partition will not fix such breakage. If you're using a 3rd party boot
manager, you may need to reinstall it afterwards.

If the region on the hard disk where the master boot record resides is
flaky, you may need to zero write and allow such software to map out such
areas. Similar occurs with where the XP boot (system) partition resides as
well.

No, I'm afraid not. JS gave you several links with possible fixes and
you said that you tried all of those suggested fixes so I don't have
anything new to add. If the hal.dll is indeed corrupt or missing you
can look for it on your hard drive in the
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder and copy it to the
C:\WINDOWS\System32 folder. That failing you can extract it from the XP
cd and place it in the System32 folder but unless the hal is the same
version as the missing or corrupt one I don't expect this to work, try
and copy a hal.dll from another XP computer that has the same Service
Pack level as yours. You could also try to replace the Ntoskrnl.exe
file in the System32 folder. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314477

By the way, if your main concern is that you have important files that
you want to save then there are relatively easy ways to salvage your
files. After you salvage your important files you can format the disk

Hi,

My Experiance with this message so far, strongly suggests that when
Windows' (XP Pro anyway) is trying to boot it is not finding the Windows
directory. In my case, all I did to create the problem was temporarily
remove the RAID card. [It could be any hardware that is drive letter ordered
before and including the OS's drive]. The Intel motherboard BIOS then
automatically reordered the drives when I started it up. Whe the card was
reinstalled the drive letter was now different, so it couldn't find Windows'
directory. All I needed to do was pull the power for the drive that was now
before it and reboot. The BIOS would have re-ordered it for me. But not me,
I couldn't figure it out before I decided that I was going to have to
reinstall Windows. That may have not been such a bad thing, I have all my
program CDs, etc., I need. What I didn't get warned clearly about was I was
going to loose all my emails. Since I reinstalled into a different directory
and used a slightly different user name, I was able to save the "My
Documents" directory. I'm still trying to round up my old emails though.
I've played with Linux machines and they all ended up locked up when they ran
out of hard drive space. Can't even get the console to move or delete files.
Such luck, I've almost come to believe that no OS really want to take care
of my data.
Sincerely, Gregory D. MELLOTT
