Boot From CD

I've just purchased a third party CD to erase all files
and records from an old PC before I donate it to charity.
The instructions say that I need to "boot the system from
the CD" and that I may need to "set the Boot Priority
option in my BIOS to boot from the CD". How do I boot
from a CD and if necessary how do I set the Boot Priority
option in my BIOS?

Thx

Hi

Different BIOSes will have different ways of changing the boot sequence.
The manual for your motherboard should show you how to do this. When you
have changed the boot sequence so that the cd drive is the first bootable,
put the CD in the cd drive and then reboot your PC.

At power on, immediately hit the hotkey (specific to the machine) that
enters BIOS setup. Most common is DEL, various Function keys and Insert
are also used. If you hit these at this point there will often be a
'Hit whatever to enter Setup' message.

In the BIOS setup, either

An explicit 'Boot' page
Down arrow to highlight the CD drive, then use the + key of the number
pad to push it up top.

Or
A 'BIOS settings' page, highlight Boot Order, and use PageDn to cycle
round to CDRom, C

Either way then have your CD in the drive ready, hit ESC and then go to
Exit - Saving settings and confirm with Y, and it will reboot, using the
CD now if one is there.

At boot you will probably be asked to hit a key to confirm that you *do*
want to boot the CD
