Boot from CD?

Hi All,

I have a problem with my neighbour's computer. They went away for the
weekend and shutdown their system. When they returned, they and I have tried
to turn it on and am getting a message that says:

BOOT FROM CD....
BOOT FROM CD....
DISK BOOT, INSERT DISK AND PRESS ENTER

It is running Windows XP Home and when they bought the system from the
store, it was installed. They are looking for the CD Restore CD's but still
haven't found them. In the mean time, what do you suggest?

I have tried changing the priority and seeing if it will boot from HDD-0
first, but no luck. I haven't opened it up and ensured the HDD wire has come
loose, etc. What about fixmbr.exe or whatever that is. Does that sound like
something that is necessary and if so how do I do this?

I have a program called Spinrite that I bought about a year ago. Will that
help me?

I appreciate your assistance.

Just a thought but is there a pen drive or similar in any of the USB ports?
Friend had same problem and that's what was causing it, it was trying to
boot from pen drive!

I had that problem with an older laptop. After much trial and error, I
found that after the system had been turned back on for awhile and just
left with black screen or whatever, then turned off and back on, it
would boot from the HD like normal.

What I concluded is that the 'old' HD is kind of like some of us old
folks, it takes awhile for it to warm up after having been turned off
for a time in a cold house. Maybe it has a touch of limbago too.

Now, when I go on vacation, I just close all the apps, turn off the
wireless card, leave Windows booted, then close the cover. When I get
back, I raise the cover, hit Restart, it reboots and all is well.
Haven't had that problem for several years now.

Guess there is enough heat being generated by stuff that keeps the HD
limber.

Hope this helps, it worked for me.

You need to quote at least part of the message to which you reply,
otherwise there is no context to know what you are talking about.

Hey Rock, sorry you (and possibly others) couldn't decipher and connect
my cogent Reply to the original problem querry. I thought all the
Replys etc. in a thread were connected and all one had to do was scroll
up to see what a Reply was addressing. Not so? Is that why a lot of
these Posts have numerous, voluminous, nausious repeats of the same
messages, etc.? Seems logical that a reply should automatically
associate itself with the original querry. If not, it would appear
some Jr programmer at MS must have written the frame for this forum.
No, that's wrong, it would have taken a Sr MS programmer to make it as
inept as you are portraying it to be.

And here I thought MS MVP's could decipher anything MS.

Hey Rock, an additional bit of help for you. If you look at the line
directly under the title for any Post, you will see a
highlighted/underlined button 'view as tree' that should associate all
the replys related to that Post, providing, of course, the Sr MS
programmer got that button right.

Hope that helps you in using the forum.

You are using google groups to see the threads, but many of us use a
newsreader and only download the recent messages, so the previous
messages in the thread are not visible. It is standard protocol to
quote at least a portion of the thread to which you reply. With
judicious snipping the post can be kept manageable. Maybe you could
learn and follow some of the common protocols, eh?

Like that? Thanks Rock, at 77, I don't want to be looked on as a
'newbie'. I was wondering how the MVP's keep so involved without
pouring through these forums all the time. I'm going to have to look in
to setting up a newsreader.

I'm curious, are you, and other MVP's who roam these forums, the
equivalent of hall monitors? If so, you, or someone, needs to send a
number of these folks to detention to work on those common protocols,
especially the 'judicious snipping' one.. And while they're at it, it
might be a good idea to review some of the basics of the English
language, grammer, punctuation, spelling, capitalization,
and.........ah well, they're techies. That's just not their thing, is
it? Reminds me of my helping my granddaughter correct her 4th graders'
Composition papers.
