how do i set the boot order? sorry, i don't know that much
about this type of thing.

sorry - a small window/menu will appear. use the arrow
keys to go up/down, and pageup or pagedown to change an
entry. change the list around so that the 1st boot device
says cd-rom, second says hard disk etc

How do I set my computer to start from the CD-ROM drive?
.
If you are using XP it will automatically check for a
system disk in the CD drive. If it finds one there it
will boot from it.

Hi!
Enter the BIOS and change the boot order; make the 1st boot preference
as CD-ROM Drive.Save the changes.

F8 during boot up and then set boot order

That won't necessarily work on the OP's computer if he/she doesn't
have the same BIOS as you.

Incidentally, are you confusing the F8 key used to select what mode of
Windows to run (Safe, Regular, Command Prompt, Command prompt with
Networking, etc)? If so, none of those modes will get the OP into
BIOS. That occurs before the OS loads.

If you are using XP it will automatically check for a
system disk in the CD drive. If it finds one there it
will boot from it.

It will detect the bootable CD and boot from it ONLY if the system
supports booting from CD AND Booting from CD is set as the first boot
option.
