I have a computer running windows xp home sp2. This problem first ocurred
when I plugged an external hard drive in. The computer crashed suddenly and
gave this error.
When I boot the computer I get an error the windows/system32/config/system
is missing or corrupt. It tells me to use a Windows setup disk and select r
to repair. I have gone to recovery console with no luck. I also did a fresh
install on a different hard drive then added the old one as a slave. (I
noticed that the old drives partitions are still intact and files are all
accessible.) I then tried to copy the file from the master over to the
"broken" slave, but I get the error Cannot copy system: It is being used by
another person or program.
After trying these things I decided to go ahead and activate windows on the
new master drive. As soon as I clicked on the activate windows button the
computer crashed and gave me the same error message as before. I assume this
is some kind of hardware failure but have no idea where to start.
