I am having problems with an XP Pro machine that does a
cyclical rebooting. When I boot in Safe Mode it locks up
at Mup.sys. I have tried to reinstall the program and it
is protected so I cannot do it. I do not get the repair
installation option when I try to run the origianl CD. I
would liek to get the data files off it. Any ideas as no
boot disk I have will recognize NTFS and I cannot find
how to get a Win 2000 or XP boot disk.

You might be able to access your files and copy them to another location if
you use NTFS Reader http://www.softnews.ro/public/cat/13/8/13-8-41.shtml

However one of the best freeware tools I've found for recovering files from
non booting NTFS systems is Knoppix. This is a fully functional linux based
(don't let that scare you because it is easy to use) operating system that
runs entirely off a CD. You simply boot with the Knoppix CD and it will take
you to a Desktop which will display icons for your Hard Drives CD-Rom
devices etc. Right click a Hard Drive icon and select "Mount" to enable you
to work with the files on that drive. Knoppix will enable you to access
other networked computers to transfer the files to or to burn files directly
to CD with it's built in burning software. This is a huge 700MB iso. You
need to download and then use an application like Alcohol 120% or Nero to
burn the iso to CD but once that is done you have an excellent
troubleshooting tool. It is free

here is a faq ftp://ftp.rfc822.org/pub/mirror/knoppix/KNOPPIX-FAQ-EN.txt

I am having the exact same problem. Is this common on XP
or is there virus out there causing this problem?

I appreciate the information on recovering the file. That
was my biggest worry. Is there a way to fix the problem
without starting from scratch?

Thanks

+ I tried to use SET and it is disabled. Is there a way to
enable it if I can't boot windows?

+ I updated the kernel32.dll and mup.sys files from the XP
CD and had no effect (got these suggestions from
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/win_xp_restart.htm).

I am downloading knoppix now.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Which program are you trying to reinstall that is "protected"? For what its
worth "mup.sys" is simply the last file that loads when you do a healthy
bootup so it might be quite unrelated to the problem you are having.
Check the info here on How to Run Repair Install
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm It might trigger you to see a
step you missed.
