I recently purchased a custom-built PC. When it arrived it had a 7 in 1 card
reader with FDD instead of the 12 in 1 (no FDD) I required to read Xd cards.
I have spoken to the manufacturer who tell me that the FDD is necessary to
re-install XP see quote.
"Thankyou for your enquiry. Yes you are correct in stating that the Windows
XP cd is bootable. However, you would not be able to install XP because your
SATA hard drive would not be detected.
The only way to do this is by installing the SATA/RAID drivers from the
black floppy disk, when prompted to do so by pressing the F6 key during
windows install.
I have no reason to dis-believe them so can anyone enlighten me as to work
around so I can take out the FDD or do I have to install a 2nd card reader.

Thx in advamce

You could also create a winxp cd with sata drivers slipstreamed into it.
Somewhat complex and no way to test untill you need it.

Thx for the replies guys,

I forgot to mention the 2 HD's are set up as independant drives no raid
arrays are implemented would this make a difference?
I ran the XP cd from boot today and ignored the F6 prompt for 3rd party
drivers and it appeared to initialise setup (admittedly on a fault free
system) and the files setup loaded contained a Promise Raid Controller
The 2 HD's are detected immediately after the POST prior to the "Any key to
boot from cd prompt" but do they require further drivers? and if no raid
arrays are in place does it need the raid drivers to run setup?
I would go out and buy another card reader but I've paid for one that I'll
never have need to use! (thats how much faith I have in my system!!!)

Sorry if this sounds a bit dumb, but I like to try and understand as much
as possible
"A little knowledge is a dangerous thing!"

Thx
