Simply set your bookmarks.htm as the startup page like I do. No
conversion is necessary. Hell, I even have my (largely unused) IE set
to open on my bookmarks.htm.

Look in this folder:

"C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\(username)\sivckilt.slt"

Do a search for 'bookmarks.html'.

Thank you... but

It turns up the defaults, but not the actual file

Unless you have more than one profile, bookmarks.html is your actual file.

Don't need a utility. Go to edit/preferences/navigator; use "choose
file" to pick your home page.

Go to:

http://www.holgermetzger.de/pdl.html

for tips on finding your bookmarks file; they're in different locations
depending on your os. I don't know why a simple search doesn't pull up
your bookmark file; I can find a bunch on my xp home machine.

Good luck

No utility needed.

Step 1: Find your bookmarks file

1) In the URL bar, enter "about:config" (without quotes)

2) Look for the line "browser.bookmarks.file"

3) Copy the value it is set at (right click on the line)

Step 2: Set browser start page

1) Go to menu, Edit | Preferences | Navigator

2) Into Home Page Location, fill in value from step 1.

3) In Display on Navigator Startup, select radio button "Home page"

4) Click OK button.

That should do it. I'm using a Mozilla 1.8a2 nightly, so these
instructions might be slightly different for whatever version of Mozilla
you're using.

No utility needed.

Maybe I need to rephrase my question.

Your method makes the bookmarks.html into the home page. However, the
Bookmarks page is (a) ugly (b) not practical to use.

But the utilities available for IE favorites organize the links so that
there's an attractive page (color customisable and so on) that starts with
links for all the Favorites folders and so forth.

There's got to be some Freeware meister somehwere who has come across this
and written a little app to produce a handsome, practical file just like
that for IE users.

=== if you mean you want to see the URL's in your bookmarks file , you
could use a program like " WebCache " ...
http://www.fsb.hr/~dzorc/webcache.html .. to do that, although you
will need to point it to your bookmarks file location , then once you
have made a new bookmark file with the URL's open it in FireFox and
click tools, options, use current page ========

Most of us use the Personal Toolbar instead of a big old
webpage we have to go find.

But if you have a page you made for IE, simply use THAT for
your start page. OR, use the method outlined, and open it in
Composer and change it to your heart's content.

I can agree with you that it's ugly, but I don't find it impractical.
Using the "Find Text as you Type" feature of Mozilla makes it easy to
find what I'm looking for. Just type a / followed by the character
string you want to find.

Anyway, I'm not an IE user and I wasn't familiar with start page maker
software. I did a little looking around just out of my own curiosity and
found a couple of things for IE like you were writing about. In fact,
they're pretty cool. In case anyone's interested, ABC-EDUCA Startpage
Creator seems pretty slick. It's at http://www.abc-educa.nl/ . Only for
IE, though. You have to provide your name and e-mail address and they
e-mail you download instructions. They seem OK, but I used a disposable
e-mail address all the same. (Oh, and the download instructions say
"Thank you for requesting an evaluation copy..." and then a couple of
paragraphs later say "As you've already noticed: The program is freeware.")

OK, so this doesn't answer your question about Mozilla. I couldn't find
anything, so maybe there just isn't anything for Mozilla yet.

I did come across something that might be of interest to you. Take a
look at

http://start.excudo.net/index.php
My Personal Startpage

There was no mention of a cost to use the service.
