Bogus "overclocking failed" error

D

Doug Roberts

I just upgraded to a 3.2 P4 on a Asus P4S800D-E. I'm not overclocking the
system. I have 1 gig of Corsair ddr ram. The system runs fine, but
frequently I get an "overclocking failed, check cmos and reboot" error when
I initially start the system. The tempertaure is fine, running around
30-35c. I haven't changed any of the default cpu settings in the bios.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Doug

Yes,

I do have the same phenomenon on another asus Mobo.

In the past, when the boot was stopped before the end, the bios used to say " improper frequency" and opened the CPU bios page for
checking and rebooting.

Now it looks like this procedure is replaced by "overclocking failed" and depress F1 for checking cmos.

IMHO this is just a question of vocabulary, nothing to see with a true overclocking.

There's a small easy to use program called Memtest. It doesn't even
install as a windows program, just dl it to a temp file and unzip it.
Try running memtest for awhile and see if you get any errors.
Just keyword in Memtest in browser. Use the easier to use non-dos one.
If you have bad ram..go to Corsairs website to forums and request an RMA
by posting your problem. I'm not saying it's your memory..but why not
check it?

I think you need to update your bios.

jdc1,
Thanks for the tip, I'll download it and give it a shot.

This is a feature
If you shut off or turn off your computer and thi BIOS is scanning,
the bIOS goes to this MODE.
WHY.?
It is simple,
First you should never shut off will booting. this is illegal.

Devils advocate:
ASUS is sick and tired of getting back MOBOS that work perfectly.
40% or more, and very costly to process ! ( passed to to the idiots
too)

Many people do not follow instuctions, they guess .
They install a CPU chip and then set the buss clocks to illegal
states,
the set them to illegal Ratio's , they set them to OVERCLOCKERS ,
illegal frequencies.
in each of these cases the MOBO seems DEAD. ( no it is the IDIOTS )
So they ( the fools) send the puppy back to ASUS.
Sad story repeats 100k times a year.

SO ASUS in a fit if panic, and rage , takes you to this setup page
any time there is an error during boot.

They are saying, you did something wrong and look?, here we are, so
FIX IT.
end Devil:

Unfortunately , we poor techs and smart users say , hey why must I
suffer?

I have asked them personally to fix this feature and provided a
solution.
and I have posted it here.

The short term solution is to NOT mess with the POWER button while
booting.
If windows wont shut off , that is ANOTHER problem , which I can solve
, ask me.
BTW. If I restart linux and then kill power as I see the Award bios
load we
get the same overclockers message.

ALL this happens because the user fails to read the operators guide.
The book says , depress the SeT bios Defaust button before condeming
the board.
NO ONE READS IT, So this is ASUS and others MOBO mFG solution to this
problem.
I dont like it either.

I forgot ONE more chunk of good advice.
Always buy and have 2 memory sticks, always buy quality and a life
time guarantee.
if you get memory errors, swap the sticks, if still error ,try one by
its self and then the other other by itself.
Bingo you found the problem.
Never have just one stick in any system ( unless you have other
systems or spares)

I have owned DDR 400 memory that is very expensive and it has failed
after 6 months of perfect performance. The seconed stick proved it.
I run 256m sticks. x2

BTW: 2:
Always read your OEM manufactures web page and check what memory they
recommend , and go with that, if you are using the fastest memory in
the world like I am using, DDR , MAX.
If you are running DDR max speed in the whole world , YOU MUST FOLLOW
DIRECTIONS ON QUALIFACTION buy the MOBO MFG.

BELIEVE IT. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They dont call it the BLEEDING EDGE , For Nothing !

Been there done that. JTH

++++++++++
thanks but DOS memory tests are usless.
I used to write software for major memory company.
the only way to test memory with out this very expensive test system
is to run as much software you can thur the system.
Load Photo shop , with multiple instances.

Waking ones , checkerboard and other patterns are not going to find a problem.
it is no better the the LAME , BIOS memory test.
Also , making the system hotter will find a marginal memory as CMOS slows with heat.

there you go.
I used to program TERADYNES, Megatests, Genrads and a host of other systems.
good luck.
