Bluetooth

Yesterday I udated my WinXP Pro machine by opening IE6 & navigating to
Tools-->Windows Update. One of the updates listed was CONWISE
Technology Corporation - Generic Bluetooth Radio. I installed it in my
computer & a new icon named Bluetooth got added in the Control Panel.

But when I try to connect my mobile phone (which supports Bluetooth)
to my PC by opening Bluetooth from the Control Panel, WinXP says that
Windows cannot find any Bluetooth device.

Any idea what could be the problem?

Moreover, the updates that I installed yesterday aren't listed in the
Add/Remove Programs applet though the updates which I had installed
earlier are listed. Why?

Do you have a dongle to plug into your USB port ? That's what I have to use
to be able to connect my mobile to the computer via Bluetooth.

In following with another poster, make sure that your Bluetooth device is
enabled. On laptops there is either a switch for this or you have to hit the
"Fn" key and the key that corresponds to Bluetooth on the laptop.

You will only see the "updates" when you have "Show updates.." checked
and some updates do not show at all.

As for your Bluetooth, yo must know that every "device" needs to
paired with a passcode (ex: 123) before accessing the device.

Unfortunately, you have update a driver via Windows Update so a now
need to "reoolback" the driver. You should not update any driver via
Windows Update since

1) Microsoft does not make drivers (except for their devices)
2) These drivers are usually older than the real ones on the
manufacturer web site
3) May be the wrong ones.

Yes I do have a dongle plugged to a USB port. Using the software that
came along with the dongle, I can create a bond between my PC &
mobile. It's just that I am not able to do the same using the
Bluetooth icon that is in the Control Panel.

Yes I do have the Bluetooth device enabled.

Any other suggestions, my dear friends?

Thanks,

Ron

Is the phone in the discover mode? etc. See if you phone has a
manual that will spell it out in detail. These are things that unless
you give your phone model, its hard to say off the top of the head.
Then still we would have to be intimate with that phone.

Do you know which version of Bluetooth you are using?

There are three that I know about:

1) Microsoft's Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) -- built-in to SP2 and
may be the icon in Control Panel.

2) BlueSoleil -- Eurpean Bluetooth protocol system separate from the
Control Panel

3) WidComm (Broadcom) -- Also uses different system than the Control
Panel.
