Can anyone help me to isolate this problem, it is driving me mad.

Reinstall the driver/software for whatever audio hardware you have in
your system. Or make sure that you downloaded the Windows XP version of
the audio driver. If the audio hardware is onboard the motherboard,
make sure you download and install the latest chipset driver package for
your mobo.

Sorry to have taken so long, but having taken your advice, I had to wait
several days to ensure the success of your wisdom which has indeed solved the
situation.

Thank you very much, however, I am now working my way through a selection of
randon coded bluescreens..... perhaps a clean install of XP may bethe best
solution, any ideas?

So which worked? Reinstalling the audio drivers? Or installing the
mobo chipset drivers?

If you are having lots of problems with drivers, I suspect you did an
"upgrade" from Windows 9x/ME to Windows XP (which is really a migrate
rather than an update). That means you could have lots of old and
incompatible drivers in your new Windows XP setup. You'll have to start
visiting the web sites for every hardware vendor for the devices in your
host - mobo, video, audio, SCSI, etc. - to download and install their
Windows *XP* version of their driver or software. Personally I *never*
do a migrate from a 95-based version of Windows to an NT-based version
of Windows because of all the pollution that gets dragged alone and
invariably instability results from the migration. Yeah, it's is faster
(sometimes but not always) but often you pay with much more time later.

Check your BIOS settings, too. Make sure SPD (serial presence detect)
is selected for memory settings rather than trying to use custom or
turbo settings. If you are overclocking then it sounds like you didn't
get it right or you went too far, so back off or revert to standard
clock settings.

If trying to bandaid the OS doesn't work, you might end trying to do a
repair. Use the bootable install CD for Windows XP to bootup using it
and use its Repair to fix the OS (use the second Repair option as the
first one puts you into Recovery Console mode).
