A friend of mine gets a blue screen. Before he can write anything down, the
computer restarts. He's running XP SP2 with the latest updates. Is there a
log that I can access on his computer that will give me the information
normally displayed on the blue screen? When I have had the rare display of
a blue screen in the past, I was able to search the web for the error
message and determine what my problem was. I'm hoping to do the same thing
for him if I can get the information related to the halt. Thanks for your
help.

Hello.

To prevent the machine automatically rebooting on a blue screen you can
right-click on My Computer then select Properties,
then go to Advanced and Startup and Recovery settings and uncheck
Automatically restart.

The error messages may also be listed in the Event Viewer, this can be found
in Administrative Tools in the Control Panel.

the error will appear in the system log under savedump

to stop the reboot from occuring during a stop, go to control panel ->
system -> advanced
click settings button under startup and recovery
uncheck automatically restart
reboot to take affect

Does it restart and boot properly or does it Blue Screen again. If it
repeatedly blue screens try using a digital camera to capture the data.

You can't possibly be serious, can you?

No, film cameras work better when taking picture through a window. But for
Vista I'm going to need a wide angle lens.
