Blue Screen

I have been getting the blue screen on my laptop. I purchased this laptop
used at a local computer store. The problem didn't start out too serious,
but lately it has become a major newsance. This computer works pretty well
when it gets going. The problem really starts trying to get it going, on
bootup the computer almost everytime will pop up the blue screen. Sometimes
it will restart automatically, but sometimes it doesn't. There are
occasional errors that I get on the computer during operation, but nowhere
near as many as when the computer is booting up. How can I figure out what
it causing the errors and what can I do to fix the problem? I can
re-install Windows if I have to, but I would like to avoid that if possible!

I suggest you Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should
help by allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click
on the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
StartUp and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Enable automatic restart on system failure after you have captured /
copied and pasted the message in a further post here.

There will also be Error Reports in Event Viewer. Please post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

Sounds like you need to run a system file check and or repair install. Check
for virus and adware first. What exactly does the messages say? What does
the errors in your event viewer say?

Right-click on My Computer, click Properties, click the Advanced tab.
Under Startup & Recovery, click Settings. Under System Failure, uncheck
the box in front of System reboot. Now try to read the error.

There is no such thing as "the blue screen" error.

There are tens of thousands (at least) of different possible errors
that can be reported by Windows XP, and most of these will use a blue
screen for the reporting.

Without the complete *verbatim* contents of the error message(s) that
appear on the blue screen it is impossible to give any specific advice
as to how to fix the problem.

Good luck
