Anything I can do?

Trevor,

That is an "Unmountable_Boot_Volume error". In other words the system
was unable to read or recognize the bootable hard drive (C:).

You can boot the drive using disk utilities and recover the disk. Here
are some:

Spinrite v6.0 - I have used this one quite a bit.
http://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm

An excellent application but requires careful reading of the
instructions! You create a bootable floppy disk or CD which will let you
diagnose and repair bad drive sectors.

Western Digital Support (WD Drives):
http://support.wdc.com/
Download the "Data Lifeguard Diagnostic" utility.

Seagate Technology Support (Seagate Maxtor):

Many instances of Unmountable_Boot_Volume can be fixed quite readily
by running CHKDSK /R

Boot the computer with the Windows XP Installation CD and choose the
Repair (Recovery Console) option from the menu. When it finishes
booting and stops at the Command Prompt enter the following command:

CHKDSK C: /R

If you do not have an actual Windows XP Installation CD but rather an
OEM "System Recovery" disk or partition then you probably can't use
that to boot to the Recovery Console although a few do offer this
choice. What you need to do in this situation is to create a
bootable Windows XP CD such as by using Bart's PE Builder from
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ Boot the problem computer with the CD
this creates, open a Command Prompt window, and enter the above
command.

That will usually, but not always, fix the error you have encountered.
If it doesn't then that most likely means either that the hard drive
has failed or that you need to do a repair install of Windows XP. To
check for drive failure go to the hard drive manufacturer's web site
and download their free diagnostic utility and run it to test the
drive. For doing a repair install see

Good luck
