blue screen of death with usb drives!

Dear all:
I have a Lenovo T60 running vista ultimate. I get the BOD everytime I
use a usb to connect to any sort of external drive (memory stick,
camera, ipod etc) as long as the device contains some ability to
transfer file the system will crash - gauranteed!! The BOD occurs
instantanously if I put the computer to sleep and wake it up, but even
without this the computer will get into the BOD eventually. It does
not matter whether I stop the device properly with "remove hardware"
or simply unplugging the usb.

this does not occur if I plug in other types of usb devices
(mouse,phone etc). The error message is something like:

ecache.sys - address 8266a620 base at 82669000

this error message is all I can get with my camera.

Even greater dissapointment is that this is a brand new machine.
Called Lenovo and the agent told me its probably software and there is
nothing they can abou it- yikes: this will be the last time I buy from
this company.

Besides this, as long as I avoid usb drives, the computer is very
stable and does not crash. This is a real drag and any help will be
greatly appreciated.

Wild-ass guess: The USB port(s) is kaput.

Same here. Computer runs fine until I try using my USB port. I insert my
flash drive and the computer freezes. No BOD-just freezes up. Nothing is
usable, not even the mouse. Have to reboot to regain control. Not my
favorite method of shutting down but it's the only thing that works. Can't
even bring up task manager. I can understand one port going "kaput", but not
all three located in the front of the machine. I have 3 different flash
drives and all three produce the same result. Any ideas?

ecache.sys file runs the readyboost feature of Vista - you're having a
problem with ReadyBoost. Can you plug the drive in without instant BSoD? If
yes then plug it in, go to the properties of the drive, and disable the
readyboost functionality on that particular stick. Another idea - have you
used this stick before to enable ReadyBoost on a different machine? If yes
then try using that machine to remove the ReadyBoost file from the drive.

thanks for the hint about readyboost sugaruss - saw it linked to
ecache during my googling.
Ive actually went into my service and disable to the entire thing. And
guess what? NO MORE BOD! Yah.
The reason why I am taking such a harsh approach is because none of
the usb drives (ipod, camera, flash) is even capable of readyboost and
was not activated as such.

Anyway, I am happy since I never use readyboost. The next question is,
why is the ready boost service causing BOD? but that is for another
time another thread.

hi Ace,
I think your problem is a little different from my. Apparently
computer freezing with usb port is not too uncommon.
But first, Does this occur with any type of usb device or just flash
drives? Second if its flash drive, is i a particular brand or drive -
eg does plugging in another flash drive cause the problem - if this is
the case then the problem is your actual flash drive and not ur os.

if it happens to any device or flash drive then try this.

1) get drivers usb controller, or anything related to usb for your
particular pc/laptop - usually the manafacture websites -
2) go into device manager and delete everything in unversal serial bus
controllers.
3) automatic driver detection comes out and select your downloaded
driver.
this should work I think.

i found was very informative.

Thank you Alex. I have 3 different flash drives and they all present the
same problem. I tried all 3 on an XP Pro computer and there was no problem.
I have Vista Ultimate. I tried the other suggestion about Readyboost but
this was not on the properties tab on all of the 3 drives.
After plugging the flash drive in, there's the Windows "boink,boink" (like
when it finds new hardware) then more "boink,boink,-boink,boink" then it
freezes. Mouse/keyboard shuts down. Have to reboot. I'll keep "plugging
away" <g>. Sorry, couldn't resist <LOL>
