I am unable to boot my Dell Inspiron laptop. I keep
getting a "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA" error.
The error message gives the following technical
information:
STOP: 0x00000050 (0xF8992000, 0x00000001, 0x80572B26,
0x00000000)

I have tried booting in safe mode. The system stops as it
is loading agp440.sys. I have tried removing AGP440.sys
from the boot sequience. That did not work.

I have also tried repairing using the setup CD. This also
stops after copying files needed for installation.

I wish to aviod reformatting the hard disk. I would
appreciate any suggestions to recover from this sitioation.

Regards
Gaurav

Hi Gaurav

A 'Repair' install may help, but if you 'clean' install everything will go. If you try the 'Repair' install, backup all your important data files as a precaution:

Thanks Will, for all your help. I have been able to
resolve the problem now.
The link you sent me was useful. I followed a link on
given on that page:

_toot.htm

This suggests a novel way of restoring system settings in
case of a problem.

Thanks again.

Check the CPU bus speed setting. Initially, I had JP2 in a
L4VXA2 P4 motherboard (Celeron 2.66 GHz CPU, 400 MHz FSB)
set to 'Auto' - changed it to '533'. When I first started
XP and W2K installs, I first had to disable L1/L2 cache
which of course is really slow, and after reboot re-
enabled it - still crashed. Resetting the mobo's bus speed
corrected the problem.
