Blue screen error - floating point state

We have a laptop that has experienced the same blue screen error a few times
now (at random). It happens when the laptop comes out of standby mode.
The stop error is:
"While restoring the previously saved floating point state for a thread, the
state was found to be invalid"
Tech.info
Stop: 0x000000E7 (0x00000001, 0x00000002, 0x00000003, 0x00000000)

Any idea what this is referring to and how I can resolve it?
Thanks.

Standby or Hibernate? That message is a generic error. Nothing specific can
be determined from it except to say that something doesn't like the machine
going into Standby.

Run MSCONFIG, click on Services tab, check Hide Microsoft Services, Disable
al that remain, and then on the Startup tab, disable all items (be sure to
physically unplug your network connection first.) Click OK and restart.
Then, without opening any apps, test Standby. Does it work? Any errors?

If no errors, then use MSCONFIG to re-enable all services. Reboot and test.
If OK, then selectively re-enable the items in the Startup tab, one at a
time, rebooting each time, until the problem returns. Ignore any other
errors due to only having parts of some application enabled with other parts
disabled.

If the error still occurs when all optional items are disabled, then it is
more than likely a hardware issue, but might be some Windows app or service.
Can't guess which one it would be, but let's cross that bridge when we come
to it. For now, do the above tests to narrow down the possibilities.

Gary - thanks for your response.
I've printed off your troubleshooting steps and will give this a go. If no
luck, I will add a new post.
Thanks.

I neglected one part, Bernie. If disabling all fixes the problem, but it
comes back when Services are re-enabled, then you have to diagnose the
Services one at a time -- that is where the problem will be, or at least
part of it (the service may go hand in hand with an item in the Startup
tab.)
