Blocking web sites on WinXP IE6.0

OK, I know the title sounds misleading but HERE'S the DEAL! I know
there are tons of filtering/blocking programs for the internet. NONE OF

them I have found to be fool proof.

SO WHAT I WANT is a program that is pretty much OPPOSITE of most
blocking programs, something that will let me give a LIST of certain
websites that are accessible and EVERYTHING ELSE is NOT accessible. Get

it? Just for an example, I only want to allow those who use my computer

to go to, let's say, eBay (not just the home page but pages WITHIN the
website) BUT they CAN'T access ANY OTHER website, unless I add it to
the list.

I hope I'm making sense here. I also need the program to be password
enabled/disabled so only one person can edit/modify the permitted sites

list.

PLEASE, if anyone knows of anything out there like this, please post a

reply

Thanks
ps: I know how the Tools->InternetOptions->Content works. I need to
update the allowed sites list on dozens of machines without having to
type them at each machine.

There are plenty of commercial filtering programs - we use one at my
kid's school - but they are fairly pricey. Do you want this for a home
or small business? It is hard to give you specific suggestions without
knowing the scale of your enterprise.

You can also easily do this with a proxy server. Again, since I don't
know the extent of your business I can't suggest anything. For a cheap
solution I'd throw in a Linux box between you and the Internet and run
Squid.

Hi Malke
How does the proxy server work? I can't enter the list of allowed sites
on the firewall since the machines don't have static IP addresses.
There has to be someway to access the file where the browser saves the
list of allowed sites. I used windows search as well as FINDSTR in dos
without luck.

Thanks

How does what proxy server work? In general? A proxy server sits between
your computers and the Internet and filters content. Specialized
filtering programs either filter by site (allowed/disallowed) and/or by
content (words). I don't understand what you mean when you say you
can't "enter the list of allowed sites on the firewall". What firewall?

You haven't said anything about your setup, what programs you are using,
your hardware, etc. or your end goal. Trying to protect small children
in your home? Trying to filter Internet content at a school or a
business?

Do some research using Google. Use search terms like "Internet filtering
software" and "commercial proxy servers".

If you want more help from this newsgroup, please be a lot more precise
about what you are trying to do, your hardware, your situation, etc.
People like me who would like to help you don't want to spend time
guessing about your needs when you could just tell us.

By the sounds of it, you are looking for software that uses "inclusive
filtering", also called "White list" filtering... You may want to try to
search using such terms...

I did come across one program that uses strictly White list filtering.
Others use a combination of white and black (the type you don't want.)
http://www.arlington.com.au/index.html

This site was found at the bottom of this page:
http://www.iinet.net.au/about/compliance/filtering.html If you read the
whole page, it give you REALLY good information about all the types of
filtering.

Here's another: http://www.childwebguardian.com/filtering-software.html
White list info for above program:
http://www.childwebguardian.com/functions/WhiteList.html

Anyway, I've done more than enough work for you... It's your turn now...

Even for kids, that's dumb.

No one would produce such a program and no one would buy it (ok except
for you) if they did.
