Is there a way in Windows 98 and Windows XP to block AOL
Instant Messenger from being downloaded and used?
I have heard that there is a Windows setting that can be
activated to block this. Need the details.

In your FireWall you can block the folowing ports:

UDP 1050, 5190
TCP 5180, 5190

In Internet Explorer, go to; Tools --> Internet options --> Security

Add to the restricted sites *.aol.com

Give the above a try.

I believe in windows 98 there is no way to disable it.
maybe there is some 3rd party software out there but best
bet is to block AOL's port at the router/firewall.

AOL Instant Messenger
Block all access to login.oscar.aol.com; However, this
DNS resolves to
more than one IP and it changes on occassion. It
currently resolves to
these IP addresses:
Translated Name: login.login-grt.messaging.aol.com
IP Address: 64.12.200.89
IP Address: 205.188.153.56
IP Address: 205.188.179.233
IP Address: 64.12.161.153
IP Address: 64.12.161.185

5190 is the SRC/DEST port for the AOL servers. Client
ports are random.

Thanks! will this block incoming email from from people
using AOL as their ISP?

Thanks - but in XP it can be blocked? And will blocking
this cause a problem in receiving email from people using
AOL as their ISP?

No.
