Blaster - ms03.26

Ok, I have been working with and cussing this computer for
two days now. I did go on the Microsoft site and found
the fix for the blaster. It then told me I needed at
least the service pack 2 to perform the fix. I
found the service packs and downloaded 2. Then, when I
tried to run the fix, it said, "This update requires
ms03.26 to be installed" So I went back and did a 2 hour
download of service pack three thinking that the
ms03.26 would be in it. Then I tired to run the fix and
it still says "This update requires ms03.26 to be
installed" so I did a search on the site for ms03.26 and
it said it was outdated and to do a search on the
site for critical updates. It came up with 34 or so that
I needed to do that would take several days to download!
So, I found one large one among them that said "Cumulative
update for service pack 3 2.1mg) so I did that one but I
still get the message "This update requires ms03.26
to be installed" At this point, I am going the turn the
machine off until tomorrow. I am praying for the second
coming tonight so I do not have to face it in the
morning! What would you suggest as it seems that
I need this ms03.26 but the site does not want me to use
it.
Thanks for all your help.

Any ideas on this?

If you have a slow connection you can always order the Windows Security
Update CD. See this website:

Jurren Bouman,

Forgot to ask, on the Blaster virus, is it in the memory
(if so, is the patch the ONLY way to get rid of it) or is
it an application and works on the software? The reason I
ask is because everything was erased and reloaded, and it
is still there.

If your running XP, then you've really messed up. XP only has service pack 1
out right now. SP2 will be out this summer, there is no sp3. It sounds like
you installed service packs for windows 2000. And if you did you only option
at this point would be to format the drive and install xp and service pack
1.
As for the blaster virus, the patch simply stops the exploit, it does not
stop or clean the virus. To clean the virus you need to use a removal tool
available on the Symantec website. To stop from getting infected again,
always run a firewall and current anti-virus program.

Greetings --

I don't know what you read or what you downloaded, but there's
only 1 service pack for WinXP, at this time. Perhaps if you had that
installed, things would go a bit more smoothly. Also, for your
information, the patch discussed in Microsoft's Security Bulletin
MS03-26 has been superseded by the newer patch described in MS03-39.

Bruce,

Thanks for the info. This is a Windows 2000 machine.
Also when the patch for the blaster was trying to install,
it stated that ms03.26 was needed. If the ms03-39 was
installed would the patch recognize that ms03-30 was a
newer version, or would the patch look for ms03.26 which
it was probably internally programmed for?

Greetings --

If it's a Win2K machine, why post in a WinXP news group? Anyway,
the installation of the MS03-39 hotfix would alleviate the need for
the MS03-26 patch, which should no longer be available.

(As an aside, why are you bothering with Win2K's SP2 and/or 3?
Why not install SP4?)

And what specific "patch for Blaster" are you trying to install?
The hotfix described in MS03-39 _is_ the patch that prevents Blaster
infestations.

If he's like me and a lot of others out here, Windows SPs and Hotfixes
sometimes tend to cause more problems than they fix, so it's
understandable for someone to go with only the SP/HF level that is
required for the desired result.

No you were infected as soon as you connected to the internet and has
reinstalled itself (as a file) on your system!
Its vital that patches are installed BEFORE connecting to the internet
or you get ReInfected!
