Blank system restore window

I have already tried using From Start-Run, type:

regsvr32 jscript
regsvr32 vbscript
regsvr32 /i mshtml

but I get an error message after regsvr 32 vbscript which reads:
DllRegisterServer in vbscript failed.
return code was :0x80004005

and for regsvr 32 /i mshtml the error message reads:
DllRegisterServer in mshtml failed.
return code was: 0x80070005

I am running XP Home Edition Ver. 2002 Service pack 2

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Martin

Martin,

The error occurs due to incorrect registry permissions, or if you're running
those commands from a limited user account. Reboot to Safe Mode, and login
as Administrator. Run those commands.

If that does not help, see:

Ramesh Srinivasan's Blog: Reset the entire registry permissions to defaults:

Hi Ramesh.

I corresponded with you about a similar issue 2 months ago.
I tried your app but had to fix the permissions manually by adding my user
account into the owners group (in advanced permissions from regedit) and
checking the "inherit from parent..." in HKLM/software/classes. It seems to
work for other people as well. Just FYI.

Thanks for posting, brandon. BTW SubInACL is a tool developed by Microsoft.

I was somewhat vague earlier but I had blank 'everything' issues due to the
classes permission problems and SubInACL responded but wouldn't reset the
offending keys (the offending keys were at default settings even when not
working so I had to add permissions but why?).

Have you heard anythng more about why this happens? Some people blame
stardock, Norton or unspecified un/installations...I was having problems with
norton around that time but I still don't know what caused it and I still see
people having this issue with differing symptoms. what would cause the
classes to start being picky as to who uses them?

Have you heard anythng more about why this happens?

No idea, brandon. I'm wondering why an application should reset the registry
permissions for the entire CLASSES_ROOT hive.

Ya good question but it wasnt the whole classes registry. Among my offensive
subkeys changed were CD/DVD sub keys but its only Java Script, VB Script and
Flash that are the real offending keys. I figure it must be a flakey regisrty
entry meant to protect an application but secured more than it meant to. I
don't think anyone knows why but as long as we know how to fix it then its
all good.

[Note: I had actually changed classes permissions from HKLM/Software/Classes
as its subkeys were missing from view until I changed them. Most people now
are changing permissions from HKCR as you say which is also working]

Well said. Mostly it's jscript which gets broken, and many things in XP use
jscript.

"Mostly it's jscript which gets broken, and many things in XP use jscript."

Tell me about it, at first the problem seemed small, I had problems
installing ActiveX and launching SWF files outside of Quicktime and I needed
a CD license which requires flash AND (sun)Java. I applied a hoard of 'fixes'
that seemed to make the issue grow until the entire classes permissions were
affected (I corresponded with you about ".ICO" associated with iconfile as
well as others) with all the changes I made it was hard to see the root
problem. Java, that rascal.
I believe you be right.
