Having implemented all the necessary upgrades and carried out the
recommendations (except reinstallation) in MKBA 81679: You Cannot Open New
Internet Explorer Window or Nothing Happens After You Click a Link, I gave
up in despair.

Frustratingly, when I ran the list of DLLs, IE actually began performing
normally, i.e. clicking on a web link took me straight to the site. However,
rebooting the computer simply unravelled all the remedial work and I found
myself back to square one.

So, I switched to a 'wrapper' browser which actually compensates for
whatever it is that is causing this problem.

See http://www.avantbrowser.com/

I find it incredible that, at this stage of development, Internet Explorer
can be rendered useless.

First eliminate any scumware.
See
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each need to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.

I already employ anti-virus, firewall and anti-spyware software.

To double-check for spyware, I have now added Spybot. After running the
latter, I went through MKBA 81679 again and IE6 began to work properly. I
then rebooted the computer and once again kissed goodbye to the
'improvements'.

I just don't see the point in wasting any more time on this problem when all
I have to do is overlay IE6 with Avant.

I know of others who are faced with the same problem and have given up
trying to remedy it.

This must meet the definition of a 'known problem', so where is the update
patch?

SpyBot S & D needs to be updated before each use. And, it doesn't catch
everything.

All spyware was updated before being run. Similarly, firewall and
anti-virus software are up-to-date.

So, other than praying for a miracle, what is the next step?
