Blank Icons In the Quick Launch

E

Edward Cheadle

The icons in the Quick Launch Bar and many in start menu
are all black. The icons do still work, you just can't see
the bitmaps. If you copy the shortcut and paste it on the
desktop, you can see the bitmap for the larger icon, it is
only the small bitmap that is a problem.

I've tried some general fixes after searching the
knowledge base, like changing the settings for the number
of colors and in one artical it said to delete the
ShellIconCached file. I could not find this file on the
hard drive.

I created a new user and the icons are still blank after
logging on.

Any Ideas?

Thanks

Sounds like corruption in the shelliconcache file, delete it and restart for
effect. The OS will recreate it when necessary. It's a hidden file in the
%windir% directory, so you'll need to "show-all-files" hidden, system in
Explorer|Folder Options

I'm feeling a bit slow today. Did not think about it being
a hidden file. Thanks.

This is the first time using this newsgroup so after I
posted I did some exploring and found the search feature
and searched on the term icon.

One post suggested I look at tip 84 on
http://www.jsiinc.com Interesting site. The suggestion
(listed below)worked.

Thank you to Dave Patrick for your quick response as well.

The problem is fixed and I learned about this newsgroup!

Right click on the desktop and choose properties. Click on
the Appearance tab. In the Item: drop-down box, select
Icon. Change the Icon size up by 1 and click the Apply
button. Change the Icon size down by 1 and click the Apply
button. Click the Ok button. Your Explorer icons should
display properly.
