Blank Event Logs

F

Frans Buissink

Small Business Server 2000 with Sp4 applied.

The event logs are blank - (all events)the event log
service is running and all appears to be well (hard to say
with out any event logs to the contrary)

All *.evt are in the dafult location and there is no
permissions applied to the..\config\ folder that could
impede access.

Any ideas?

It's possible that there might be some corruption. Try this:

-Go to the Services MMC.
-Set the Event Log service to 'Disabled'
-Reboot the machine.
-Navigate to %systemroot%\system32\config folder
-Rename *.evt *.evt.old
-Set Event Log service to "Automatic"
-Reboot machine once again

Same problmm with my clean install SBS2k system with SP4
applied: Blank event logs displayed although logs are
still present (properites for any log gives a healthy
size). I think it may be more subtle however: if I open
Computer Management MMC direct and expand Event viewer,
then open an event log other than Application, the log
will display. As soon as the application log is opened,
all logs cease to display. My suspicion is that the
symptoms have only appeared since the application log
reached its size limit and started rolling over, earlier
this week the logs were fine (post SP4).

Mine is a clean W2K install with all security patches and NAI virus
protection up to date before connecting to external networks. The machine
is behind two firewalls and virus software is updated every day. I don't
have any other symptoms. The blank event log has been reported on other
newsgroups as a post SP4 effect. I hope it is not an infection!

Cheers

Andy
