BLANK EMAILS

I would like to report a bug in MS Outlook 2003 with regard to receiving
blank emails. I am a Network Administrator for a Bio Tech company located in
Newark, Delaware.

Two months ago I began receiving calls from several of my users reporting
that, on occasion, they receive blank emails in MS Outlook 2003. When they
view the same emails via web mail, they can read the body of the message
without any problems..

When I began troubleshooting, I set up a test account on my mail server and
transferred problematic email to this test account from the mail server and
not from MS Outlook2003. I tested these emails on MS Oulook2003 / Outlook
Express and Mozilla Thunderbird via IMAP4. Results: After MS Oulook 2003
fresh install, I was able to read the email. Once MS Outlook had received
patches and/or updates, I was no longer able to read the emails. When testing
in Outlook Express, I was able to view the email only if the Font
International Read Setting (located in “Options”) was checked to “Use default
encoding to western European”. If this is not checked, email body was blank.
While using Thunderbird, I had no problems reading any of the emails.

It appears to me that the problem is in MS Outlook2003 with the UFT8 encoding.
In Outlook Express, you have to force all incoming messages to encode in
Western European to see the body of the message.

I opened a trouble ticket with Microsoft (Case Number SRX050826602295) told
them my findings.

This was there response back:

We feel the Outlook message properties have been stripped from the mail
therefore Outlook cannot render the email. Outlook Express does not use
message properties, so it is not affected.

Or

We may have removed some functionality with Office updates for security
reasons.

I would like to thank you once again for your time and patience and in this
case your contribution has been critical.

Thank you for choosing Microsoft!

Their first statement regarding the message being stripped because all of our
email gets filtered through a Barracuda Spam Firewall, in my opinion, is not
the case. I believe the problem was due to a security update that caused
problems with MS Outlook’s encoding functionality.

I believe that Microsoft broke it and should fix it. They decided not to
correct the problem and are using the excuse ”WE HAVE REMOVED SOME
FUNCTIONALITY WITH OFFICE UPDATES FOR SECURITY REASONS”

If anyone else is having this problem, please use this Case Number
SRX050826602295 in your subject line and

e-mail your concerns to:

Maybe if enough people complain, Microsoft will fix the problem.
