blank dvd's not recognized

please help, this is my 1st computer so please go easy with any jargon, my
problem is that when i insert blank dvd it is not recognised, have tried
different types of blank dvd but to no avail, i can play dvd's with info on
them & blank cd's are recognised, i 1st noticed this after i tried to burn a
file i had downloaded to dvd, i'm using vista basic if that helps

Are you sure you have a DVD burner?

There are many DVD-ROM/CD-RW drives pre-installed in less expensive systems.
They provide no DVD writing at all, just reading.

Double check your DVD drive, if it says "DVD-ROM" your only recourse is to
buy a DVD burner to burn DVDs, you won't be able to with the one you have.
