Blank Desktop After Clean Install?

After a clean install of XP Pro, I get lo res graphics that I can't change in
the monitor settings and the only icon that appears on my desktop is the
recylce bin.

I am installing from an original cd that came with my Dell laptop.

If there is a ridiculously simple answer, please forgive me, as I have been
trying to avoid the reinstall by using every trick I know and could find for
about 10 hours now and have finally given up. Now this.

Thanks in advance.

You should also have another CD. Blue I think with Dell (blue and white)
that says either resoureces or drivers. They're a pain to figure out but
that's where you'll get your graphics card and monitor drivers. Secondly
right click on the start button, select properties, and click classic start
menu and that will put your icons on the desktop.

Ah yes. I found the other CD. You're not kidding about it being a hassle!
Thanks for the help...I was so miserable today that my wife went to bed
without saying a word to me!

*chuckles* Glad to see you got it sorted out.

Windows XP ALWAYS starts for the first time with a clean desktop
containing only the Recycle Bin icon when installed "clean".

If you get low-rez graphics when starting Windows for the first time,
it is because your video card driver has not been configured or
installed at this point. XP ALWAYS starts for the first time with the
Microsoft-supplied VGA driver at 640x480 resolution if it can find no
OEM video driver.

Your solution is to install the XP driver which came with your video
card, or reconfigure your display settings so that they display a
higher resolution, or both.
